Supporting Australian doctors with locum placements since 2007

Dr Oncall provides personalised recruitment services specifically for doctors. We’re a locum agency founded and run by three doctors who consult in their chosen field of medicine, which means we understand the realities of clinical work, on-call pressures, and the balance between career and lifestyle.

From your first placement through to long-term locum work, you’re supported by a team that knows what it’s like to be in your shoes and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when you need us.

Support designed by doctors, for doctors

We understand what’s really involved in stepping into a new placement, and how important it is that the details are handled properly. Our team takes care of the process from start to finish, cutting down the admin and making sure you’re offered well-supported roles that fit the way you want to work. Here’s what we take care of for you:

  • Identifying roles that align with your experience, availability and preferences
  • Negotiating shift dates, hours and on-call expectations
  • Coordinating travel and accommodation where required
  • Organising and maintaining credentials and compliance paperwork
  • Negotiating pay rates on your behalf
  • Managing invoicing and following up payments

Travel and accommodation

In most locum roles, travel and accommodation are taken care of, which makes working away from home much easier. Some hospitals offer a capped travel allowance, others arrange accommodation directly, and in certain placements, family-friendly options are available.

When you register with Dr Oncall, we’ll talk through your travel and accommodation needs early, so we can focus on finding roles that fit what you’re looking for and avoid unnecessary back-and-forth later on.

Matching qualified medical professionals with locum jobs Australia-wide

We work with doctors across many areas of the medical industry and place locums into roles that suit their experience and the settings they prefer. Our placements include public and private hospitals across the following specialties:

  • Emergency medicine
  • General Practitioners
  • Intensive care/acute care
  • Anaesthetics
  • Paediatrics
  • Rural and remote hospital medicine
  • General surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Psychiatry

24/7 support

Locum work rarely fits into standard business hours, and support shouldn’t stop once the day ends. Shifts can change with little notice, travel plans sometimes need adjusting, and questions often come up while you’re already on placement, particularly when working away from familiar settings.

Our team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so help is accessible whenever it’s needed. If something changes late at night, early in the morning, or over a weekend, you can speak directly with people who understand clinical environments and are used to responding quickly and calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I begin locum work?

Where you can undertake locum work depends on your current employment arrangements.

If you’re employed by Queensland Health, you are generally not engaged as a locum medical officer within other Queensland Health public hospitals, except in limited circumstances where there are exceptional workforce needs. This restriction does not prevent you from undertaking locum work in Queensland private hospitals, or in public and private hospitals in other Australian states and territories.

You can find more information here.

If you’re employed by NSW Health, approval from your employing hospital is required before undertaking locum work within NSW Health public hospitals. This is managed as secondary employment and must be documented prior to placement. Our team can guide you through what’s required.

You can find more information here.

When can I begin locum work?

You can begin locum work once you hold general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). AHPRA registration is a legal requirement to practise medicine in Australia, including locum roles.

Once your registration is in place, we can begin discussing suitable opportunities and progress placements as they become available.

What paperwork do I need to complete?

STEP ONE:

Talk with our consultants to help us understand what work you’re interested in. This helps us identify what paperwork is necessary for you to complete.

STEP TWO:

You’ll need to supply us with the following documentation as part of our standard registration process:

  • A current, complete up-to-date CV.
  • A certified justice of the peace copy of your driver’s licence and passport.
  • Three referee names. One must be a current supervisor. The other two must be senior doctors you have worked with in the past six months.
  • National police clearance.
  • A copy of your medical degree.
  • Immunisation evidence.
  • A copy of your professional indemnity insurance confirmation certificate.

STEP THREE:

We’ll help you complete any additional paperwork required for your specific placement.

STEP FOUR:

Some hospitals will also have their own paperwork which you’ll receive after your placement and shift have been confirmed.

Can I choose how often I work?

Yes. Locum work is flexible, and how often you accept shifts is entirely up to you. Some doctors work regularly throughout the year, while others take on occasional placements around existing roles, leave, or study commitments. We’ll discuss your availability so opportunities match what you’re looking for.
